Assignment: Design and implement a service project involving children with literature.

Arrange to work with an organization* that focuses on children, such as a school, day care, pre-school, etc.

Plan reading of stories to and/or with children.

Plan enrichment activities based on the literature.

Arrange at least four visits which require an hour each to read and complete the activities.

Write a reflection paper, due October 15, describing each experience. Consider:

the responses of children;

what occurred as expected?

what surprises were there?

what would you do differently?

The project is worth up to 10 points.

All arrangements and plans must be approved by the instructor prior to implementation.

*The College of Saint Mary Library is initiating a story time program with the Omaha 2000 Early Childhood Education Center on campus. Sessions will involve groups of about 20 children and are scheduled for mornings. This would be an ideal site for those students who are not student teaching this term.
